Soon-to-be (fairy) Godmother

March 27th, 2008 by Zoë

I realised today that I haven’t yet posted about one of the most important events in my family since… well since Nessy got her new lungs in December. They always say good news comes in threes and our family was no different this year.

On Christmas morning I sent my brother a text to say merry Christmas and he texted back asking me to give him a call on his mobile. I thought this was a little strange, since international mobile calls are not exactly cheap. So I offered to Skype Out to him since he wasn’t at home with his computer. The reason for the urgency was immediately revealed; namely that come September I would be an auntie! Hooray!

They had only found out the day before and asked me to keep it a secret until they were out of the danger period and were sure that it would all happen as wished and planned. Well we are now WELL out of that period and I can happily tell everyone.

However, at the time I couldn’t help feeling a little bad for my older sister, who had been trying to get pregnant for some time. Well what do you know… a couple of weeks later I got a text from my mum to tell me that I will be a step-auntie too. The babies are due within only a few weeks of each other.

Last week I got a wonderful email from my brother’s wife asking if I would consider being Marmalade’s (their nickname for the little peanut) godmother. I immediately replied with a hearty “YES!” and proceeded to mop up my smudging mascara. Now I can’t help thinking about the whole fairy godmother thing… does this mean I will be able to turn mice into horses? That would be so cool… I could try them at racing first, and if they weren’t any good I’d still make a fortune in glue futures.

Now, now children. That was a joke. I remember Animal Farm and how hard I cried when Boxer got sent to the glue factory.
