The new job

September 14th, 2007 by Zoë

Since I’ve been in my new job about a month and a half now, I thought it was probably time I gave you an update on how it’s going. I was hesitant to write about it before now, mostly because I wasn’t really sure what the job, or the company for that matter, was all about. But now that I’m getting a handle on things, I can finally give you the juice.

Just to update those who didn’t read the post about me getting the job in the first place, the company is MoConDi (Mobile Content Distributors) and my job title is Project Manager.

I guess I should start by explaining what it is this company does. It took me a little while to understand it, but I think that’s because some of the people here have been working in this industry so long that they forget that not everyone knows what mobile content aggregation is.

So here’s my take on it; basically we have contact with people who create mobile content (such as games, wallpapers, ring tones, videos etc). We put this content into a catalogue and offer it to people who are interested in distributing said content to mobile users. In most cases this is through a website storefront which we help them create. We also have other products that help mobile service providers offer content to their users, but essentially that’s what it’s all about.

My role in all this is to manage some of the different projects we have going at any one time. Sometimes it involves launching a new website storefront, and sometimes its developing new products or services; it varies a lot. But that’s one of the things I’m loving about it.

We have offices all over the world, and in some cases just a single staff member in a single location. So far we have offices in Oslo, Amsterdam, Sibiu (Romania), Los Angeles, Sydney and London. We also have staff in France, Greece, Italy and Poland. This means that I spend a LOT of time on Skype and Messenger, and rely pretty heavily on email. People travel a lot in this company, but so far there hasn’t been a need for me to go anywhere. I’m hoping that will change once some of my current projects get underway.

So that’s the skinny on the new job. I’m really enjoying the challenge of working in a company that is so spread out, and also enjoying the lack of politics that comes with working in the private sector. For years I thought the security of the public service made up for the constant political nonsense that went on, but it really doesn’t. Although we have office politics the same as any company and/or industry, it’s not the same. No one here looks like they’ve had their soul slowly extracted over the years, and no one has that special brand of cynicism that you only find in the public service.

They gave me a new mobile phone (the Nokia N95, which I am really loving) and a laptop. I also get my mobile account and home internet paid for, which is great. You don’t get perks like that in the public service either. :D

I should also mention that, as usual, my first project was to manage and launch a new corporate website for the company. We launched it last week, and you can have a look at it here: www.mocondi.com

I can’t take credit for the design, but I did spice it up a little from the original design, and integrated it into Joomla, the content management system I used to use for this site before I turned it into a blog.
